How to properly prepare a file for DTF digital printing? Printexpress.pl Gdańsk guide

DTF (Direct To Film) digital printing is one of the most popular technologies for printing on clothing. It allows you to obtain durable, colorful, and very detailed graphics on T-shirts, sweatshirts, bags, and caps. However, in order for the final result to meet your expectations, it is crucial to prepare the file for printing correctly.

At Printexpress.pl Gdańsk, we perform DTF printing on customer clothing and on clothing available in our catalog every day. We know from experience that most printing problems result from incorrectly saved files. That is why we have prepared this practical guide.

File format – PNG with a transparent background

For DTF digital printing, the best and recommended file format is PNG.

Why?

  • PNG supports transparency
  • does not compress the image lossily
  • is ideal for printing on clothing

The file must be saved on a transparent background (without a background).

Unfortunately, as many as 80% of customers send JPG or PNG files with a white or black background. In such cases:

  • removing the background is often very difficult or impossible,
  • automatic background removal programs cannot handle details,
  • even manual processing in Photoshop often does not produce an aesthetic effect,
  • small elements and edges of the graphics are destroyed.

Therefore, let’s not assume that “the printing house will remove the background” – this is not always possible in an aesthetically pleasing way. Of course, in the case of simple graphics that have been saved in very high resolution, background removal is possible, but we are talking about more complex designs with small elements and thinner lines.

Resolution – minimum 200-300 ppi (the higher, the better)

For DTF printing to be:

  • sharp,
  • legible,
  • without the “pixelation” effect,

the graphics must have a high resolution.

Recommendations:

  • minimum 200 ppi
  • preferably 300 ppi
  • the graphics should be large at the design stage, not enlarged. It is always better to reduce the graphics to the required size than to enlarge a small image to a large format.

Small graphics downloaded from the internet, social media, or screenshots from a phone are not suitable for digital printing on clothing.

Beware of JPG – the most common customer mistake

JPG format:

  • always has a background (even if it appears “white”),
  • compresses the image,
  • destroys details and edges.

The result?

  • a white background on the print,
  • ragged print contours,
  • unsightly borders,
  • poor print quality on a T-shirt or sweatshirt.

Vector graphics – when can they be used?

Some designs are ideal for sending in vector format (e.g., PDF, CDR, EPS, AI).

This applies to graphics that are:

  • simple,
  • low in color,
  • without gradients and tonal transitions,
  • based on shapes and text.

The advantages of vector graphics are:

  • lossless scaling
  • perfect sharpness regardless of the size of the print

If you are not sure whether your design is suitable for vector – contact us, we will be happy to advise you.

DTF printing on your own clothing or clothing from our catalog

At Printexpress.pl, we perform DTF printing:

  • on clothing provided by the customer (after checking under a hot press whether the clothing is suitable for printing)
  • on clothing from our catalog (T-shirts, sweatshirts, bags, and more)

This gives you complete freedom of choice:

  • cut,
  • color,
  • weight,
  • clothing manufacturer.

DTF digital printing is ideal for both single items and short and medium runs.

FAQ – frequently asked questions about DTF print files

1. Can I send a JPG file for DTF digital printing?

We do not recommend this solution. JPG files always have a background and are lossy compressed, which negatively affects the quality of the print on clothing. In practice, we are very rarely able to aesthetically remove the background from a JPG, especially with small elements and medium-resolution graphics. The best format for DTF printing is PNG with a transparent background.

2. Does Printexpress.pl remove the background from the graphics sent?

Yes, if the quality of the graphics allows it. However, this often does not produce a satisfactory visual effect. Automatic tools and even manual processing in Photoshop often cannot handle the precise cutting of details. Therefore, please send ready-made PNG files without a background, prepared specifically for digital printing on clothing.

3. What file resolution is best for printing on a T-shirt or sweatshirt?

The minimum recommended resolution is 200 ppi, but the best results are achieved at 300 ppi. The higher the file quality, the sharper and more aesthetic the DTF print. Low-quality graphics may look good on screen, but lose detail when printed.

4. Can I order DTF printing on my own clothing?

Yes. At Printexpress.pl Gdańsk, we perform DTF digital printing both on clothing provided by the customer and on clothing from our catalog. If you do not have your own T-shirts or sweatshirts, we will help you choose the right model, color, and weight for a specific print.
