New printed T-shirt? Find out why you should wash it before wearing it for the first time.
Have you just bought a new sweatshirt or T-shirt with a personalized print? Although the temptation to put it on right away and show it off to the world is huge, we have some important advice for you: put it in the washing machine at 30 degrees first. Why is this so important? We explain the process of how your clothing is made “behind the scenes.”
Say goodbye to chemical technology
The production of promotional clothing and the marking process (especially techniques such as digital DTF printing, DTG, and screen printing) require the use of specialized agents. These include:
- Pretreatment (primer): A special liquid that makes the ink bond permanently with the fabric. It may leave a slightly stiff layer or a specific smell on the fabric.
- Activators and adhesives: Essential for the print to be flexible and not crack, but residues may remain around the graphics.
- Pigments: Although we use certified inks, any excess should be washed off before direct contact with the skin.
Safety for the skin
Your skin is your largest organ. Freshly printed clothing that has passed through heating tunnels and presses may contain residues of fixing agents. Washing at a low temperature (30°C) effectively removes these microparticles, minimizing the risk of irritation or allergic reactions – which is especially important for children and people with sensitive skin.
Hardening the print
Paradoxically, the first wash “hardens” the print. Gently refreshing the fabric at 30 degrees allows the cotton fibers to “settle” and the print to finally adapt to the structure of the material. This will keep your favorite graphics looking great for much longer.
Removing dust and dirt from transport
Before the garment reaches you, it travels a long way: from the sewing room, through warehouses, to our printing house. The first wash is simply a basic hygiene rule that removes dust and dirt collected at various stages of logistics.
How to safely wash a “fresh” print?
To ensure that your clothing will serve you for years, remember the golden rule of 30 degrees:
- Turn inside out: This protects the structure of the print mechanically.
- Low temperature: 30°C is the ideal temperature – it effectively refreshes while protecting the pigments.
- Mild detergents: Avoid strong stain removers and bleaches directly on the graphics.
- Do not tumble dry: The high temperature in dryers is the biggest enemy of prints (it can cause them to crack).
In summary: Washing new clothes before wearing them for the first time is not only a matter of cleanliness, but above all your comfort and health. Spend those 45 minutes on a short wash cycle, and your new T-shirt will reward you with durability and safety!
