Measure your body – the basis for a well-fitting T-shirt
Start by measuring your body. You will need a tape measure. Measure:
- chest width (circumference at the widest point),
- back length – from the nape of the neck to the waist.
- This will help you determine which size from the table best fits your body type.

How to measure the dimensions of a T-shirt?
Once you know your body measurements, it’s time to check your clothes. How do you go about it?
- Lay the T-shirt flat, e.g. on a table.
- Measure the length and width.
- Avoid measuring clothes on yourself, always measure them on a flat surface.
Underarm width – how to measure?
The width under the arms is one of the most important parameters, which often raises doubts. How to measure it correctly?
- If the T-shirt has side seams, measure the width from the point where the seams meet under the arms.
- If there are no seams, measure the width under the arms between the outermost edges of the fabric.
Not sure how to measure the underarm width? Lay the T-shirt on a table and measure a straight line from left to right at the height of the armpits.
How to measure the length of a T-shirt and sleeves?
The total length of the T-shirt is measured from the highest point where the collar meets the shoulder to the bottom edge of the front. For the sleeve length, measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the sleeve (it is worth checking this even on short-sleeved T-shirts).
If you are interested in the specific circumference of the sleeve, you can also measure it at the widest point.
Size chart and margin of error
Each manufacturer uses their own size chart, so it is important not to ignore it. Remember that:
- manufacturers allow a margin of error of +/- 2.5 cm, which is completely normal.
- some fabrics may shrink slightly after the first wash.
Measure and compare instead of buying by eye
If you are wondering how to measure a T-shirt correctly, precision, patience, and following the measurement guidelines are key. When buying by eye, it is easy to make a mistake. Measure yourself, measure the T-shirt, compare with the chart, and enjoy the comfort of a well-fitting size.
