What is the best grammage for a t-shirt?
There is no single answer to the question of what t-shirt weight is best. Choosing the right weight depends on how the t-shirt will be used. The weight of the material is an important, but not the only parameter affecting quality and wearing comfort. In our article, we take a closer look at what influences the choice of the right t-shirt weight.
What is the weight of a T-shirt?
The weight is the mass of one square meter of material, expressed in grams. In the case of T-shirts, this means how much the fabric used to make them weighs. A higher weight is often mistakenly equated with better quality, but this is only one of many factors affecting the comfort and quality of a T-shirt.
What determines the choice of the right fabric weight?
The choice of fabric weight should be based primarily on the intended use of the T-shirt. T-shirts with a lower fabric weight (approx. 140-160 g/m²) are light, breathable and great for summer. Models with a higher weight (180-210 g/m²) have a denser weave, are more durable, less transparent and keep their shape better. They are often chosen for everyday wear or as company clothing. Thicker T-shirts are also perfect for colder days.
How does the weight affect the durability and comfort of a T-shirt?
The weight has a significant impact on the comfort of a T-shirt. Thinner T-shirts are light and more breathable, but may be less resistant to intensive use. Models made of thicker material are more durable, but are less flexible and heavier. In addition to the weight, it is important to pay attention to the quality of the cotton. Shirts made of combed cotton are more pleasant to the touch and more resistant to pilling.
What is the best cotton weight?
There is no “best” weight for cotton T-shirts – it all depends on what the T-shirt will be used for. For everyday use, T-shirts with a weight of 160 to 180 g/m² are ideal, as they are durable but still light and comfortable. Premium clothing often uses a weight of 200 g/m² and more, which gives the T-shirt a fuller look and an elegant appearance.
What weight is suitable for a T-shirt with a custom print?
T-shirts with print should be well suited to the printing methods. For methods such as screen printing or DTF printing, T-shirts with a weight of 160-180 g/m² are suitable. For sublimation, we recommend models with a weight of approx. 140-160 g/m², made of polyester. For embroidery, we recommend T-shirts with a weight of at least 180 g/m², and preferably 200 g/m² and more. Thicker material can withstand the thread load better and ensures an aesthetic appearance of the embroidery without the risk of the fabric wrinkling. Remember that T-shirts that are too thick may be less susceptible to some printing techniques.
What should you consider when choosing?
When choosing the weight of the T-shirt, consider factors such as:
Comfort – a well-chosen weight ensures comfort for everyday wear.
Type of material – combed cotton is softer and more durable than semi-combed cotton.
Intended use – light T-shirts are suitable for summer, while thicker models are better for colder temperatures.
Printing technique – different methods require different weights and types of material.
What is the best T-shirt weight?
The best weight for a T-shirt is the one that meets your expectations.
