Screen printing – what is worth knowing?
Screen printing is a printing technique that is most often discussed in terms of durability and color intensity. While this is true, its potential does not end there. In today’s post, we will look at the less obvious aspects of screen printing, i.e., trends, ecology, image, types of printing inks, and practical tips that will help you make an informed choice about this printing method.
What is the screen printing process?
The printing process begins with the preparation of plates. A separate plate is created for each separated color in the design, which is then used to expose the screen. A photosensitive emulsion is applied to the mesh using a squeegee and then cured in stages in special drying tunnels at a temperature of 160 degrees Celsius. The areas covered by the film remain intact, while the emulsion is cured on the remaining areas. After development and drying, a ready-to-use printing template is obtained, through which the ink will pass during the printing process. Keep in mind that this is a stage that requires precision, as the final result depends on the quality of the screen preparation. Only when done correctly will the print be highly resistant to washing.

What inks are used in screen printing?
Two basic types of ink are used for screen printing.
- Water-based inks – virtually odorless and harmless, they work well on dense meshes. They allow for delicate prints that integrate well with the fabric, giving a soft-touch effect.
- Plastisol inks – most commonly used in garment screen printing. Their biggest advantage is their excellent coverage and the ability to achieve intense, saturated colors. They give a slightly rubbery effect, are durable and resistant to repeated washing.
Thanks to the different types of inks, the print can be adapted not only to different materials, but also to the desired visual effect or tactile sensation.
Screen printing on clothing – trends in fashion and advertising
Although the technique has its roots in ancient Japan and China, modern screen printing is experiencing a renaissance in fashion and advertising. Where is this printing method most commonly used?
- Streetwear and limited collections – screen prints are now present in the collections of independent brands that focus on craftsmanship and uniqueness.
- Events and promotional campaigns – cotton bags, T-shirts, and caps with screen-printed designs emphasize the prestige of the brand and ensure a lasting effect.
- Personalization – customers are increasingly looking for products that will make them stand out from the crowd. Screen printing makes it possible to create short runs of high-quality products.
Ecology in screen printing – is it possible to print responsibly?
In a world where sustainable production is playing an increasingly important role, screen printing is also evolving:
- Water-based inks – an alternative to plastisol inks. They provide a softer print, better fabric breathability, and less impact on the environment.
- Reuse of screens – in many cases, the screen can be reused, reducing waste.
- Energy-efficient drying processes – modern printing houses invest in solutions that reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.
The use of screen printing on T-shirts
Not all printing techniques are perceived in the same way. Screen printing is associated with reliability and excellent color reproduction. All this means that textiles printed using this method are more often perceived as more valuable. In fashion and promotional items, this method acts as a subtle signal of quality, especially for brands that want to build a premium image. That is why screen printing is a good choice when you care about a long-term effect, not just a short-term promotion.
Is screen printing durable?
One of the biggest advantages of screen printing is its resistance to wear and tear. A well-made print:
- withstands dozens of washes while retaining its color and shape,
- does not wear off or crack as easily as thermal transfer or foils,
- is often more durable than the fabric itself – it sometimes happens that the print “outlives” the material on which it was made.
However, durability is influenced by factors such as:
- the type of ink used,
- the quality of screen preparation and the drying process,
- proper care (washing inside out, avoiding ironing immediately after printing).
Practical guide: how to prepare for a screen printing order?
Before you place an order, check:
- graphic file – preferably in vector format (PDF, AI, EPS, SVG).
- colors – it is worth using the Pantone system to avoid differences in shades.
- material – cotton, blends or synthetics, each substrate reacts differently to ink and drying temperature.
- care – inform customers to wash products inside out and avoid ironing directly on the print.
How to remove screen printing from clothing?
Sometimes we want to get rid of a print, e.g., because of a new design or to give the garment a second life. Unfortunately, screen printing is not easy to remove, because that is its strength – the print bonds strongly with the fabric fibers.
Possible methods (with varying results):
- Chemical solvents – they may work, but they often damage the fabric or leave marks.
- High temperature and mechanical scraping – works well on synthetic fibers, but requires caution so as not to burn the material.
- Professional services – some printing or laundry companies undertake to remove prints, although the cost can be similar to the price of new clothing.
The most practical solution is usually to cover the old print with a new one (e.g., a larger screen-printed design, embroidery, or patch) rather than removing it completely.
Screen printing vs. digital printing – which to choose?
Many customers wonder whether screen printing or DTF digital printing is the better solution. The answer depends on your needs:
Screen printing works best for medium and large print runs when you want durability, color intensity, and a premium effect. However, each additional color means a separate screen and higher preparation costs.
Digital printing is a solution for small series and even single items. It allows you to reproduce photos, tonal transitions, and a full range of colors without additional preparation costs. However, the print is not as durable as screen printing and wears off faster.
So if you are planning a large order and want durability, choose screen printing. On the other hand, if you are looking for personalization and short runs, digital printing is the better choice.
Interesting facts about screen printing
Screen printing played a huge role in pop art. The most famous example is Andy Warhol’s iconic works (e.g., the image of Marilyn Monroe), which were created using this method. This printing method is also used outside of fashion and advertising, including in the production of printed circuits and photovoltaic cells. Screen printing is also popular in artistic circles and among activists.
